[Photgrapher's comment: Today Judy and I attended a memorial at the state capital for
soldiers who have died in Iraq. It was lonely, gray and overwhelming to see all
the crosses laid out on the capital lawns...we forget who has paid the price for
such outrageous folly. It was organized by a veterans group in Olympia. And we
forget all the Iraqi civilians who have paid for the treachery bestowed upon
them by Rumsfeld and company. With the figurative smell of death caught in the
lens of my camera, I later collaged together various images from today’s
memorial...something to ponder...something to ponder...Martin
Kimeldorf.
[Ed.:Thanks,
Martin, for creating a very touching collage of the Memorial...Dennis]

Arlington NW After Action Report by G. Jim James
Appreciation: Thank you Steve Markham, from Bugles Across America, for playing "Taps." We appreciated the loan of the crosses from VFP Chapter 92 and Evergreen Peace and Justice Community. Thanks also goes to the The State of Washington General Administration for the permit to hold the event. Though we desired to use the wire supports to hold the crosses upright, we also realize that Washington State was the first State in the U.S. to allow the Arlington Memorial on a state capitol ground. We were able to read through the 1084 names of the war-dead using the sound system provided by Walt Bowen. Thanks! We were able to read the entire list through three times during the 24-hour memorial. The funeral style drumming of Terry Zander during the procession from downtown to the Capitol Campus was very meaningful. Thanks, Terry! The Sunday Memorial with Vaude deVille singing his inspired lyrics for this occasion were very moving. Thanks, Vaude. Thank you to the Olympia Police Department and the Washington State Patrol for providing safety for the Procession. Thank you Martin Kimeldorf and Patrick Dixon for providing digital pictures. Thank you, Ron Eggleton, for video taping on Saturday night. A big thanks to Jim George for securing the shelter and delivering the crosses. Finally, thank you for those who carried crosses to the memorial and made the event a so special for many.
